The mission of Logan Heights CDC is to strengthen individuals, families, and businesses in Greater Logan Heights neighborhoods through community empowerment, education, economic growth, and housing development.
Our vision is that the Greater Logan Heights (covering Grant Hill, Logan, Memorial, Sherman, and Stockton neighborhoods), is a thriving, equitable, and inclusive community of healthy, happy families filled with safe walkable open spaces, vibrant commercial corridors, and cultural neighborhood activities that draw people here.
Since 1995, Logan Heights CDC has served residents and businesses in Greater Logan Heights, Barrio Logan, and Southeast San Diego, all part of federally designated Promise and Opportunity Zones. These are high-poverty areas where the government has prioritized partnering with local leaders to increase economic activity, improve educational opportunities, leverage private investment, reduce crime, and enhance public health. Logan Heights CDC leads the community’s progress toward these objectives by working alongside residents, business owners, and civic leaders to identify, explore, and integrate pathways to prosperity that provide short- and long-term benefits for the overall community and for the households and businesses that are a vital part of its fabric.
Our core work has been to provide business, education, and employment resources that translate to new job opportunities, economic advancement, and community wellness. Specifically, our Economic Development department offers Career & Financial Advancement services that focus on building individual and household prosperity, while those pursuing entrepreneurship can access our Small Business Advisory services, which include an array of training and technical assistance. We also provide access to banking services through our recently launched Financial Wellness Center, a partnership with Cal Coast Credit Union. In the area of education and positive youth development, we operate the Future Achievers Preschool, which offers STEAM-focused, affordable early childhood education for children of working parents, and Youth Empowerment & Diversion (YED) programming to ensure youth ages 6-18 are connected to community-based resources that promote healing and engagement.
Logan Heights Community Development Corporation (CDC) is a community development corporation that is a federal tax-exempt charitable organization under section 501(c) (3) of the Internal Revenue Code.
Logan Heights CDC exists to serve the residents of Greater Logan Heights (GLH), an area that lies directly to the south and east of downtown San Diego. Home to approximately 27,000 residents, GLH consists of five named communities (Sherman, Logan, Stockton, Memorial, and Grant Hill) and has undergone a tremendous change between the 1950s and the present day. While the area was predominantly home to Caucasian and African American populations in 1950 (58% and 38% respectively), today GLH’s population is primarily Spanish-speaking (85%), with much smaller numbers of African Americans (8%) and Caucasians (6%). To the eye, Logan Heights presents both as vibrant and somewhat dilapidated; however, the streets are lively, with many people walking, biking, and selling goods on the sidewalks. Logan Heights is a rich world in the sense that many hallmarks of the cultures of those who live there are evident, from the frozen treats sold by street vendors to the Latin American and African American fare in local restaurants to the festivals and celebrations held there. At the same time, Logan Heights’ residents face a lack of resources on many fronts.
The CDC provides services to various age groups, including preschoolers (ages 2-5) through the Future Achievers Preschool, youth (ages 6-17) through the Youth Empowerment and Diversion Program, and adults and seniors through Economic Development programs. Over the past 28 years, Logan Heights CDC has built trusted relationships and supported collective prosperity across Greater Logan Heights, Barrio Logan, and Southeastern San Diego. These communities, with a total population of 81,392, are primarily Hispanic (73%) and African American (14%). Challenges include high poverty rates (40-45% of households) and low educational attainment (over 60% of adults have less than a high school education), limiting employment opportunities to low-paying service jobs.
